The use of plastic packaging in the household poses a number of risks to human health. Until recently, the main culprit was the substance bisphenol A, which is used in the production of plastic to increase its strength and elasticity.

According to scientists, bisphenol A is the main cause of various diseases such as liver disorders, heart problems, abnormal brain development in infants and disorders in the development of the hormonal system in children.

This toxic substance easily penetrates our food and beverages, especially when reusable plastic containers or when heated.

To the health damage from the use of plastic products in everyday life can be added the adverse effects they have on the human reproductive system.

Plastics and the substances they contain have a detrimental effect on fertility, say gynecologists.

Laboratory tests show that cells that are cultured in plastic laboratory containers rather than glass are much faster than others. According to scientists, this is due to the plasticizers that are used in the plastic - ie. of the bisphenol in question.

According to Professor Milko Sirakov, plasticizers themselves are not dangerous to human health, but in combination with other factors have a detrimental effect on the human body.

When food and beverages are heated in plastic containers in a microwave oven, harmful substances are released. Substances called xenostrogens enter the food from the packaging. The effect is higher if the food is greasy or salty. Xenoestrogens penetrate our food, even if we store it in the refrigerator, but to a much lesser extent.

These substances have a detrimental effect on male fertility. Their involuntary intake leads to a decrease in the quality and motility of sperm. Under normal circumstances, about 50-60 percent of sperm have a normal shape and motility, which makes them suitable for fertilizing the egg, but xenoestrogens lead to a reduction of nearly 6-7%.

Xenoestrogens, as their name suggests, have an action similar to the female sex hormone estrogen. According to Dr. Georgi Stamenov, in women the intake of xenoestrogens prevents the egg from being fertilized. They degrade the quality of eggs and affect chromosomes.

Experts are adamant that consuming food in plastic packaging is particularly harmful to human health. Even the plastic cups in which the coffee machines offer the aromatic drink are dangerous.

Metal cans are also not neglected, offering energy drinks, carbonated soft drinks and beer. The inner layer of these packages also contains plastic.
