According to recent studies, Bulgarians drink remarkably little water a day. A healthy amount of life-giving fluid should be at least six glasses a day. In Bulgaria, however, analyzes have shown that many people drink only one glass of water a day.

The study was conducted on the occasion of International Water Day - March 22, as part of a campaign aimed at promoting the benefits of good hydration for human health.

It is also shocking to find that our compatriots do not know the harm to the body caused by excessive dehydration. Experts remind that water is life and in addition to quenching thirst, it is of great importance for many biological processes taking place in our body.

In the last ten years, specialists from the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University in Sofia have conducted a national survey among different age groups on how much water is taken daily.

The data show that the amount of mineral water consumed by Bulgarians is between 22 and 28 ml, while the amount of carbonated soft drinks is many times more - between 62 and 158 ml per day.

The study reached the most alarming indicators while observing adolescents. The analysis showed that children and students consumed energy drinks more than four times a week. Eighty percent of adolescents said they drank mostly soft drinks at school instead of water.

Experts recommend that, in order to avoid the alarming tendency, parents should not wait for the child to ask for water, but should offer him water regularly in order for him to get used to the important habit.

The same goes for adults - we don't have to wait to get thirsty to drink water. The feeling of thirst is a delayed symptom of dehydration and we should not allow it to appear, experts advise.

Failure to drink enough water can lead to dysfunction of the nervous system, thermoregulation, alkaline-acid balance. The aging process is intensifying. Dehydration itself is a pathological condition in which the body's water content is reduced.

It leads to diarrhea, food poisoning, persistent vomiting, pyloric stenosis, toxicosis of pregnancy, polyuria in diabetes, kidney disease, hypervitaminosis with vitamin D, hyperparathyroidism, Addison's disease, diuretics.
