Hawthorn, also known as the Herb of God, is a widespread plant that can be found all over Bulgaria. In appearance it looks like an unsightly thorny shrub, but in fact it is an extremely valuable herb that is used to treat a number of diseases.

The usable part of the hawthorn are the fruits and flowers, which are dried in the shade. Medicinal decoctions, juices, syrups, etc. can be made from them. That is why here we will introduce you in detail to the health effects of hawthorn:

- From time immemorial, people suffering from heart failure, cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmia, atherosclerosis and insomnia are recommended to take a decoction of hawthorn every day;

- In Bulgarian folk medicine, the consumption of hawthorn is recommended for Bazeda's disease, atherosclerosis, enlarged prostate and shortness of breath;

- Hawthorn is also used to dilate blood vessels, to lower high blood pressure and to regulate heart rate;

- You can prepare a decoction of hawthorn flowers by pouring 2 tablespoons of them with 400 ml of boiling water and leave them soaked for 2 hours. Then strain the decoction and take 70 ml 3 times a day before meals. In a similar way you can prepare a decoction of the fruits of hawthorn. You need to boil 1 tablespoon of them in 450 ml of water and let the decoction simmer on low heat for 15 minutes. Then strain and take 70 ml 3 times a day before meals;

- From the fruits of hawthorn you can prepare a medicinal syrup, as you only need hawthorn, sugar and citric acid. The washed fruit is poured with boiling water and boiled until soft, filtered and 1 kg of juice is added to 1 kg of sugar. Bring to the boil again until thickened and when you see that it is ready, add the citric acid. If you want the finished syrup to retain its natural color, you can put the container in another container with cold water so that it can cool down faster;

- For all the recipes for the preparation of hawthorn told so far, it does not matter whether you choose red or black hawthorn, but the second variety is not so common in Bulgaria.
