Social laziness is a social phenomenon characterized by the fact that the larger the group of people doing a job, the less effort each of them gives, and as a result less work is done. The social phenomenon was first proven after a series of experiments as far back as 1927.

The study involved ordinary people who had to lift weights individually. After that, the participants were united first in pairs, then in four and eight people. The idea was that the larger a group, the more weight it could lift.

However, the expectations did not come true. When the groups were made up of two people, they lifted up to 93 percent of the load that each of them lifted.

When the groups grew to eight people, the load lifted was only 49 percent. Since then, this effect has remained in psychology as the Ringelman Effect.

The scientists continued other experiments, such as pulling a rope. The results were repeated. With each increase in the number of participants, the efficiency rate decreased.

Since then, a number of luminaries in psychology have tried to explain this effect and how to counteract it. Usually, when a person relies on himself, he is much more motivated and makes an effort to achieve the set tasks.

When another person joins him, the first one starts to save energy. The larger the group, the more each of the participants in it saves energy, as this is difficult to notice from the others.

The attitude to work in groups also has an effect on the quality of work. If one member of the team has a negative attitude towards the task, it inevitably affects the attitudes of others. It is gradually being created social passivity.

There is still no developed social technology that allows overcoming The Ringelman effect. The industry that provides team building methods and literature to motivate employees makes millions in profits.

The truth is that no matter how much money is given to unite the team, the larger the group, the more inclined a person is to be more passive.
