If alcohol is part of your weekly routine, you should find time to work out in the gym at all costs. New research shows that regular physical activity can help balance the harmful effects of alcohol.
It has been found that people who drink alcohol but also exercise regularly have significantly fewer health risks than those who drink but neglect the gym.
Alcohol has been shown to increase the risk of several cancers. However, research clearly shows that regular physical activity almost offsets this increased risk.
The study is the work of scientists from the University of Sydney in Australia, led by Associate Professor Emanuel Stamatakis. Researchers, although they have shown that exercise reduces the risk of cancer, still cannot understand why.
Alcohol consumption is thought to increase inflammation and reduce immune function. Both conditions are associated with cancer. Physical activity, on the other hand, reduces inflammation and increases immune function, the researchers wrote.
Ultimately, the mechanisms by which alcohol can cause cancer can be combined with the mechanisms by which exercise can prevent dangerous disease. The two activities have opposite effects, the researchers write. In other words, exercise neutralizes the effects of alcohol.
In the study, researchers looked at the daily activities associated with physical activity and drinking habits of more than 36,000 men and women in England and Scotland. Participants were divided into several groups based on their level of alcohol intake. One group consisted of people who never drank, the other of former alcoholics, the third of people who drank little, and the fourth group of regular drinkers and alcoholics.
In the five years that the study lasted, the group of regular drinkers and alcoholics was most affected. Nearly 12% of them developed some form of cancer, and 54% - cardiovascular disease. Of the people who fell ill during the period, however, only 2% trained regularly, and the rest did not do any sports.
