Enlargement of the sebaceous glands or hyperplasia is called the condition in which the glands in the body that secrete sebum have expanded in size. From the enlarged glands, the skin and hair visibly become oily and pimples form.

Enlarged sebaceous glands are more common in men. They are numerous small nodules with an uneven surface and yellowish color, located mainly in the forehead, head and face.

The condition of enlargement of the sebaceous glands can be caused by a number of reasons - from long-term negative effects of sunlight on the skin to organ transplantation.

Causes of enlarged sebaceous glands

The main factor that is still being considered by specialists, leading to an increase in sebaceous glands, are hormonal disorders. Changes in the levels of the hormones androgen and testosterone lead to an increase in the sebaceous glands.

Disorders in androgen hormone levels are most often inherited. Andorgens play an important role in the formation and normal secretion of sebum through the skin. In addition, they are a key factor in regulating the activity of the sebaceous glands.

Disorders with testosterone occur mostly during puberty in boys, when their sebaceous glands increase and more sebum is secreted from them.

Reasons for enlarged sebaceous glands there may also be diseases of the nervous system, liver disease and overweight. The activity of the sebaceous glands is enhanced by foods rich in fats and carbohydrates.

Abuse of certain types of steroids can also cause the condition.

The main symptom, which indicates an increase in sebaceous glands, is the appearance of small pimples about 3 millimeters thick, which are concave in the middle. Most often, these pimples appear on the forehead and cheeks, and sometimes around the armpits.

When squeezed from these pimples, sebum is released in the form of a white liquid. If left untreated, pimples will continue to appear.

Another sign of enlarged sebaceous glands is excessive oiliness of the hair and skin. They look shiny, as if smeared with oil.

Diagnosis of enlarged sebaceous glands

In order to diagnose the condition, as well as the disorder in the body that causes it, a histological examination is performed. This study shows a violation of the sebaceous glands, their structure and location. The formed pimples are also studied.

Treatment for enlarged sebaceous glands

One of the most effective therapies to remove pimples that result from enlargement of the sebaceous glands, is the laser treatment.

In this procedure, lasting no more than half an hour, the formations are removed with a laser beam. No scar appears at the site of the removed pimples and does not cause any unpleasant damage to the face.

After the procedure, the skin is soothed with antiseptic ointments and solutions for 10 days.

Treatment can also be performed by electrocoagulation. With it, the pimples are removed by means of a device that emits high frequency current. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and also does not cause facial scars.

After stimulation, the formations get a crust, and within 2 weeks they disappear completely.

The buds can also be burned with liquid nitrogen. It takes several sessions to be completely removed, but the procedure is not painful.

After treatment of enlarged sebaceous glands, for a certain period of time it is not recommended to expose the patient to sunlight, even weak.

Folk medicine for enlarged sebaceous glands

There are also several recipes in folk medicine with which unpleasant pimples can be removed if it is proved that they are the result of enlargement of the sebaceous glands.

In one of the recipes you need to mix 1 head of roasted onion and 30 milligrams of soap. The onion should be mashed and soap added to it. The mixture is placed on the buds for 20 minutes every day.

For another procedure you will need equal parts honey, sour cream and salt. An ointment is mixed from the products, which is applied to the formations every day for 30 minutes.
