Palm Sunday is a mobile Christian, religious and national holiday. It is celebrated in both the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant churches. Each time it falls a week before Easter, on Sunday, just after St. Lazarus' Day. The holiday is also called Vrabnitsa, Flower Sunday, Vaya (Vaya), Kuklinden or Palm Sunday.

This year Palm Sunday is celebrated on April 10.

The week before Easter is called Holy Week. Palm Sunday is the first day of it. In it, Jesus Christ enters Jerusalem on a donkey and is greeted with great joy by the people. They greet him with palm branches in their hands.

In Bulgaria, the willow has been chosen as a representative of this holiday. On the night before and during the night vigil, these twigs are lit in the church. In the morning they are given as gifts to the believers. So everyone brings willow twigs into their house, from which they weave a wreath. He is placed at the door against evil, lessons and diseases. Traditionally, the gum burns the following year when it is replaced the next.

The main ritual of Lazarus Day and Palm Sunday is lazarus. It is practiced only by girls, and the rite is a kind of "initiation" in virginity, in premarital age. It used to be thought that a girl who had not lazarus could not marry.

The girls gather, and each lazar group must perform a cycle of songs, and in some places a dance, typical only for these holidays. Once upon a time, the girls visited all the houses in the village with their ritual. The traditional meaning is for the lazars to bring into each home their ritual blessing for prosperity and fulfillment of the deepest dreams and desires.

In some regions of Bulgaria the ritual "kumichene" is practiced. The young girls, who have already celebrated the eve of Lazarus' Day, gather, each carrying with them a halo of willow twigs and a special ritual bread "doll". All this is placed on boards that are released into the river at the same time. Whose wreath floats in front of everyone, its owner becomes a "godmother" and leads the dance to her home.

It is believed that on this day the dead come out of their graves and demand from their relatives to bring them something. Before sunrise, women go to the cemetery with willow twigs and hay in their hands. They burn incense with cumin, water it and place the branches near the monument. Then they set fire to the hay in the same place.

Despite the strict fast, on Palm Sunday, fish are allowed on the table.
